Hunt Club Photo Field Trip on Saturday, 31 July

Hunt Club Photo Field Trip

Hello everyone!  If you are planning on coming on the VBPC Photo Field Trip this Saturday, then this email will give you all the information you will need.  If you aren't coming, "Why Not???"  I have received MANY emails from members that are planning on attending.  I am expecting at least 20 or 30 members to show up.  You won't want to be the only one that doesn't go because it will surely be a lot of fun.  That being said, I will not be able to make it (my daughter's violin graduation was moved, and I can't miss that).  So Mark Huber (cell: 717-4120) and Joan Grippo will be leading the charge. And so far the weather looks like it will be perfect! http://www.wavy.com/subindex/weather

The cost is anywhere from free to $10.  The petting zoo is $3, but there are a lot of other places that you go on the farm for free.  There are a few other things that have costs associated (pony rides, hay rides, etc).

We are not bringing any models, but feel free to bring your own (children and grandchildren would be PERFECT).  You may bring your tripods and portable lights if you wish.  There are usually a lot of kids there, playing in the petting zoo and water sprinklers.  If you want to shoot any of them, do the right thing and ask their parents first, and offer them some of your images.  Generally parents are OK with that.

The Hunt Club has farm buildings, ponds, gardens, and lots of animals.  I think everyone will find something that interests them.

We will be meeting at 10:30 on Saturday morning (That's this Saturday, the 31st).  We will meet in the gravel parking lot in front of the Barn Office.

Here is the farm's website:

Here are the directions that are posted on the website:

And here is a google map;

We are also planning a meetup at the IHOP at the intersection of General Booth Blvd and Dam Neck Rd after the field trip. This will give everyone a chance to chimp thier shots and show them off. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimping and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBVCiqEHv7w

Are you getting the Compact Flash?

If you aren't getting at least two or three emails a month from the Virginia Beach Photography Club, usually entitled "VBPC Compact Flash", then we don't have your correct email address.  Please email the VBPC president (skip@pelorus.org) with an updated email address and we will be sure to add you to our lists.  VBPC active members only.

Upcoming Events as of 20 July 2010

Some more details about upcoming events:
August Presenter:  Carl Anderson will talk about printing photos at the membership meeting on August 3rd.  He will be discussing different types of paper, printing methods, and everything you ever wanted to know about printing.  He will have samples of different printing methods on display.

PhotoWalk is July 24, 2010.

Join me at the Hunt Club in Virginia Beach July 31st.  We will meet there at 10:30AM and admission is $3.  This event is open to all club members, beginners to advanced.  BYOM (Bring Your Own Models).  There are a lot of different things to shoot at Hunt Club, from farm animals, plant life, farm buildings, ponds, etc.  I have received verbal RSVPs from many of the club members, so it should be a great turnout.  Send me an email you you have any specific questions: skip@pelorus.org

Photohunt:  Sat Oct 16 at 10:00AM we will be "competing" in an annual Photohunt.  The way it works is we will announce at the October 5th membership meeting the location of the Photohunt.  All I can tell you is that it is within a one hour drive from Chesapeake.  I don't even know the location right now.  On the day of the event, once you get there you will receive a card with a list of things that you will need to shoot. Some of the items may say something like "Go to this spot.  There you will see three things.  You may shoot all three or them, or you may shoot only one of them three times."  Or the card may say "Go to this spot and find this one thing.  You may shoot it three times".  In any case, no matter what, you may press your shutter a maximum of 36 times (on your honor here) for the day, to capture all twelve items.  There will be a few rules to be discussed about post processing to keep everything fair .  This has been a very fun event in the past, so you will not want to miss it.

Atlanta Bread display:  Owner has agreed to allow us to have a display.  There are a lot of blank walls in the restaurant that need exciting photos!  Those interested should e-mail a contact sheet (3x5 thumbnail 72 dpi) to Rob Twine for approval by the owner.  If this is successful, we may be able to do the same a Jake’s BBQ on General Booth.

Online competition:  Just a reminder that the online competition is still open and accepting uploads.  The upload window will close at 10:00PM on the 25th of July.  The theme for this month is "Weddings".  Many members have been asking about alternatives to the print competition because they don't print a lot of their photos.  Well, this is your chance!  Just go to http://vabeachphotoclub.org/OnlineCompetition (must be logged into the VBPC website).

Bill and Linda Lane Workshop: http://www.lanephotoworkshops.com.  Bill and Linda have agreed to do a mini workshop but we need to find a date that works for them and us.  We have 3 hours of classroom instruction and then we shoot a selected local site.  The cost is $50 per member.  The Lanes receive $500 and the club makes $50 for every participant over ten.  If we have 20 participants the club makes $500. This has also been a VERY popular event for the club members, and it helps us make money for the club if we get enough participants.

From the Treasurer:  We have $2800.  Picnic cost was $327.
Banquet:  We will need a banquet committee to help us plan the January awards banquet.  The members of the committee wil help us choose a date, location, food options, and events & entertainment for the banquet.  Ultimately the budget and details needs to be approved by all club members in the November membership meeting.

Other possible upcoming field trips: Alan Rabe is planning a field trip to St John’s Episcopal cemetery in Hampton, probably in November.

We are also planning a trip to Williamsburg, probably late in the summer.

VBPC Annual Banquet

The VBPC Annual Banquet is scheduled for Saturday, the 23rd of January at 7:00 PM (doors open at 6:30 PM).  The banquet will be held at Rockafeller's in Virginia Beach.  We will be giving out awards for the annual competitions, which means that if you won first place in any of the monthly print competitions this year, then you need to bring your print with you to the Jan 5th membership meeting so that it can be entered into the annual competition.  There will be other awards as well, and a fantastic menu.  The cost is only $7.50 per person, and you know at that rate, tickets will sell fast!  We will be limited to 80 people, so don't delay!

A few other details:

  • There will be a cash bar
  • There is mandatory valet parking in the parking lot, but there is not an established price.  The attendants work for tips, with the average tip being one or two dollars.
  • We are still working on getting a guest speaker.

Menu:

  • Baked Ziti
  • Baked Ziti with Shrimp
  • Chef's Choice of Vegetables
  • Fresh Baked Breads (Cornbread and French Bread)
  • Dessert Buffet
  • Rum Cake
  • Chocolate Éclair pie
  • Coconut Cake

We have set up a registration page here on the website where you can RSVP and tell us how many guests you are bringing.  After that, you will have an option to pay with PayPal (as always, you do not need a PayPal account--just a credit card), or if you prefer, you can pay with cash or check at the Jan 5th membership meeting.

Here is the link, and you must be logged in to register:

Meeting Reminder

Please remember that the November meeting will be on Tuesday, Nov 10th.  This is the SECOND Tuesday of the month instead of the normal first Tuesday.  The meeting date was moved this month due to the conflict with the November state elections.  Furthermore, the Wedding and Portrait group will be meeting on the 2nd of Nov at ECPI.

Speaking of elections, don't forget that we will also be holding the VBPC general elections in November.  If you are interested in running for any of the positions, please contact Skip so that he can get you on the ballot.  skip@pelorus.org

Board Meeting Minutes 3/24/09

3/24/09 VBPC Board Meeting

Meeting called to order at 6:40pm by President

Hallie ran down the list of upcoming speakers and special events
She has a full committee staff now, consisting of Roy Widgeon, Mike Ornoff, Dave Grochmal. Steven Kestler will be in charge of education.
Mark Huber is in charge of the "Introduction to Photography" group (for lack of a better name)
July 4th picnic is in the planning stages - we hope to have a speaker for the meeting

Focus Groups -
Due to the HUGE increase in the meeting room fees (from $20 to $50 EACH) we are planning to ask participants to invest $1 each for the facilities.

Competition Committee (Mindy)
Competition in absentia - this was discussed, a vote was taken to set it aside for further study. Mike O suggested that we allow "X" entries per year, with "X" TBD.
The Club will revisit this in the summer

Church Meeting Rooms:
Skip and Tom will meet with the church to try and negotiate a lower rate for the meeting rooms, as they went from $20 to $50.
We will be checking out the Central Library for possible meeting sites

BYLAWS:
This was a HUGE topic. Concern was expressed by attending members about the current by-laws and constitution, as they give the board pretty broad powers. Adrian provided copies of documents from another club he is a member of, and we also had a copy of the Shutterbug Club bylaws; we will be exploring this over the next few months, and attempt to come up with a more "acceptable" set of by-laws for the Club. This MUST be completed by August, so as to give the members a chance to review it, comment on it in September and October, in time for the November elections.

MEMBER DIRECTORY:
Another HUGE topic. Some members want to have access to each others emails, because not everyone responds to private emails in the forum. It was pointed out that most of the members online have their emails published on the website under their profile info. This is another issue we want to bring to the membership at large, for further input.

TREASURER'S REPORT:
Some members had expressed concern that this was not in the newsletter, and we had not been announcing it at the meetings. Regarding the publishing of the info in the newsletter, we decided a year or so ago to NOT do so, since the newsletter was publically accessible; that we would announce the info at the meetings, and/or make it available to anyone who asks. I explained that, regarding it NOT being announced in recent months, I had forgotten it due to time constraints at the meetings. The books are open and available to ANY paid member.
